Whoo~!! Finally! As promised, here is part one of my linearting tutorial ;D I hope you find it helpful!

Hiro Mashima owns Lucy Heartfilia, the character featured in the lineart.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask me in the comments :meow:

Does the canvas changing become necessary if I am making a line art of a sketch I drew~? ;A;

Totally up to you ;) All canvas size changing does is make the line larger or smaller in terms of pixels, so just use whatever suits your needs best ^__^

Oh, okay x,DDD
What if I changed the canvas size? o.o
Would that affect the quality of my sketch?
I'm fine with that as long as I am able to see the lines good enough, I know what my picture needs to look like. x,D

I just got a tablet, so I'm learning more about sai since I use to just draw with the built-in-mouse of my Mac ;A;

Your sketch is one size and that can't be altered. Whatever size you draw it at will stay the same. Even if you change the canvas size, you'll only stretch the sketch to fit, making the quality worse usually. It's the same with the lines. If you don't change the canvas size, your lines will stay the same size as the sketch - whatever size that is. If you stretch the canvas, the lines will be larger than the sketch.

In other words, it all just depends on what size you want your lines. If your sketch is 500pix X 500pix and that's large enough for you, line without changing the canvas. If you want your lines to be larger, change the canvas to 1,000pix X 1,000pix or something. Your sketch will remain at 500, but your lines will be 1,000.

You're very welcome! I'm glad you got something out of it ^__^

You can make linearts out of anything really, but always remember to credit the original artist if you use their work and also ask them for permission to use their work if you can.

Anime screenshots work very well for linearts though ;)

Huhuhu why didn't I see this when I was just learning how to do linearts. T___T This is really helpful and I must say it's one of the best lineart tutorials I have ever seen. You included details that other people deem unnecessary, but those details are what we actually need! Thank you so much! You're awesome! Heart

P.S. I can totally relate to the part where you couldn't find the tools other people mentioned. I was like, "Why don't I have that Pressure tool!??!?!" XD

Wow, thank you so much! :iconyuihugplz:

^__^" Glad you see my random waffling on as detail XD That makes me feel better. I saw how much a typed up and was all "Ah hell... ain't nobody got time fo' dis >__>"

OMG! YES! I don't know if it was just other tutorials or what, but they'd just say "select the curve tool", and I was always going "lol, where's that?". I think they may have forgotten to mention that you need a new lineart layer, or maybe I was just slow ;P

Hi i was wondering, whats the best way to lineart black hair like this guy here z.mfcdn.net/store/manga/7723/0… ? would you just colour it all black or attempt to try and find the lines?

Hmmm... It's funny, because as I tried to think about how to answer this I realised I actually haven't lined an image of a character with dark hair like that XD

However, I can say that for me, trying to find the lines is what I'd do. Don't take this as being the best way - do what you find easy/enjoyable/the best way, but I like the more openess plain lines offer compared to lines that are coloured in black. You might find it easy to follow a few of the lines by tracing alongside the highlights in the hair, and for others you may have to rely on your ability to draw in lines that you think look good.

In short, I can't really recommend a direct strategy, as I don't have one myself - if I ever get one I'll be sure to let you know ;D All I can suggest is trial and error :/ Sorry

The best of luck though~! (:

:< my crack sai version don't have some the tools where can you guys suggest i can download sai with these tools?

Hmmm... Firstly (and only because I made this mistake at the start) are you making a lineart layer? When you first open SAI the tools will be different, as you need to make a lineart layer to get the lineart tools. This is the little icon on the right of the paper with the fountain pen.

If you've done this and you still haven't gotten what you're looking for, then yes, you may have to get a new SAI. I actually can't remember where I got mine, but I know I simply typed "Download Paint Tool SAI" into Google to find it.

Best of luck~
